Dr. Katherine Lee
Dr. Katherine Lee is a licensed psychologist and nationally certified school psychologist. She specializes in comprehensive psychological, psycho-educational, academic, and special education eligibility assessments. In addition to her clinical work at The Thought Loft, she is an Associate Professor in Residence for UNLV’s School Psychology Program, which offers a NASP-accredited EdS program and APA-accredited PhD program. She strongly believes that most problems arise from lack of sufficient information or experience, and that through psychoeducation, increasing our knowledge, and practicing skills that marry this knowledge with our values, we can become proficient at leading our best lives with deep meaning, joy, connection, and stability.
Dr. Lee received her PhD from Teachers College, Columbia University after completing her Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree at Princeton University. Her post-doctoral training in Las Vegas with Dr. Stephanie Holland expanded her experiences to working with youth in foster care, and her additional training with Dr. Julie Beasley honed her assessments skills in diagnosing learning disorders, autism, ADHD, and other developmental disorders. She then served as a licensed and nationally certified school psychologist in the greater Las Vegas area for 8 years working primarly with K-8 students. She left the schools to begin teaching at UNLV, where she teaches and supervises the clinical training of graduate students completing psychological assessments at The Practice.
While her direct clinical experiences are with young children through adolescents (age 2 years, 6 months through age 13 years), she has supervised many cases assessing older adolescents and adults. Dr. Lee loves working with children and employs a cultural-ecological framework towards her assessments, while also acknowledging the strict legal and ethical guidelines of special education law that may pertain to the individual child’s circumstances. She aims to understand how the child developed from the pregnancy all the way to present day, within the context of the child’s environment. She always puts the child first, so she can be relied upon to advocate for your child and your child’s best interests in the schools when appropriate. You may want her to serve as an Advocate at your child’s school or to conduct an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) if you disagree with the school’s special education evaluation.
Dr. Lee is also a mother of four children, so she understands the joys and challenges of parenting and co-parenting, family & sibling dynamics, family stages and stressors, and navigating life transitions from the perspective of a parent (not just as an individual). She offers Parent Coaching and short-term Parent Support for Parents going through Transitions. Many times we just “wing it” and trust we will all make it through major life changes relatively well. However, there are ways that Dr. Lee can help with the practical organization of tasks that need to be completed, with ensuring each child has their needs met during the changes, and with creating a plan so that the adjustment of ALL family members can addressed proactively and not reactively.
Versed in conversational Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, Dr. Lee loves to meet new families from diverse cultures and connect over food, culture, and family stories. She enjoys practicing hot yoga, being outdoors, hanging with her friends and family, adding to her watchlist, and dancing and singing with her kids.
